Introduction: The Bailiff’s Unit provides security services to the Alameda County Superior Courts. A Lieutenant is assigned as a Unit Commander, and is also responsible for the Sheriff's Civil Unit, and answers to the Court Services Captain, who in turn reports to the Countywide Services Division Commander.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Bailiff’s Unit is to provide those services mandated by statute as well as to maintain the safety and security of everyone who enters the facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities: The Bailiff’s Unit provides building security, courtroom security, maintains control of in-custody prisoners, and provides weapons-screening at designated buildings. The Unit also acts as a liaison between local police agencies and other courts within the county.

COURTROOM DEMEANOR FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC: No eating/drinking, no talking or making of excessive noise in the courtroom.  Babies or young children who are crying/talking must be removed from the courtroom. There is absolutely no communication with in-custody defendants, either verbal or non-verbal. Unauthorized communication is against California Penal Code Section 4570, which is a misdemeanor.

Facilities Served: The Bailiff’s Unit provides security staff at three locations in the northern geographical area of Alameda County.
