Jail Training Program INTRODUCTION
The Jail Training Program is a component of the Detention and Corrections
Administration Unit (Jail Support). The program is monitored and directed by the
Jail Training Sergeant. The Jail Training Officers (JTO) are experienced
deputies who have completed a 40-hour P.O.S.T. certified training course.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Jail Training Program provides specific training designed to facilitate a
deputy’s transition from the academic setting of the Basic Academy to the
performance of real life duties related to the Detention and Corrections
Division.
THE PROGRAM
Upon completion of the academy, the trainee is assigned to Santa Rita Jail.
During that time the trainee will complete 80-hours of instruction, which is
mandated by the Corrections Standards Authority (Core Course). Upon completion
of the Core Course, the trainee will transition into the four week (168-hour)
Jail Training Officer (JTO) program.
The Jail Training Program consists of two (2) phases. Each
trainee is assigned a JTO who is responsible for covering five major categories:
Appearance, Attitude, Knowledge, Interpersonal Skills and Performance.
Additionally, each phase of the program has specific Core Tasks relating to each
of these categories. Daily appraisals are completed to monitor each trainee’s
progress. The goal for every trainee is to demonstrate his/her ability to
perform each Core Task at an acceptable level before working independently.
